The Information Technology (ITEC) minor at Southern Illinois University
Carbondale prepares graduates with hands-on experience in: solving
problems with information and communication technologies; reviewing
policies on information technologies and their impact on individuals
and society; and mastering basic tools and concepts of digital
media production.
The
basic concepts and skills include but are not limited to:
- assessing and meeting the changing technology needs of an organization;
- using the latest equipment and software applications employed in professional environments;
- using computers effectively as a tool to accomplish a given task at hand;
- using networked communication systems to gather news and information;
- participating in challenging discussions about the political and cultural implications of information technologies;
- and understanding the role of digital technologies in the media industries.
Learn and Apply:
- Production techniques and applications in digital imaging, digital audio, digital video, desktop publishing and multimedia.
- Fundamental concepts in hardware, software, telecom, databases and e-commerce.
- Software packages including spreadsheets, database management, problem solving and managerial decision making skills.
- Prepare to meet changing technology needs in business and industry, media, education, and the arts and sciences by using the latest
equipment and software technology found in the work environment.
Criteria
Students may enroll in the Information Technology minor as early
as their sophomore year with a cumulative grade point average
of 2.5.
Requirements
Only 18 hours required; nine hours of ITEC minor core courses
and nine hours chosen from a broad range of 300-400 level electives.
A 2.5 average GPA or better must be maintained in core and elective
courses for the minor to be awarded.
